Are there free business-for-sale marketplaces in Australia?
Yes. SEEK Business, BusinessSales.com.au and bizflip all let a seller list at no cost, and Bsale, AnyBusiness and BusinessForSale.com.au do not. The difference that matters is not the price but the gate attached to it: a free tier is commonly time-limited, ranked below paid listings, restricted to private sellers, or visible only to paying members rather than the public. Yes, there are — but "free" carries a different meaning on each site, and the meaning is usually the point. Some free tiers are a full listing with a time limit. Some are a full listing that ranks below paid ones. At least one is a listing the public cannot see at all. None of that is dishonest advertising; it is how a marketplace that gives away its main product pays for itself. It does mean that comparing free tiers on price alone tells you nothing, because they all cost the same thing.

The three gates that turn a free listing into a paid one
1. The visibility gate
This is the one to understand properly. BusinessSales.com.au's free listing is real and runs for six months, but its own comparison table marks its listing visibility as "Insiders Only", against "All Buyers" for the paid Silver and Gold tiers. Insiders are members — the platform sells a BusinessSales Insider membership advertising access to 400+ exclusive listings. So a free seller is advertising to a subscriber pool, not to the open market, and a free buyer cannot see free sellers. That is a coherent design, and it is not what most people picture when they read the word free.
2. The ranking gate
SEEK Business publishes the multiplier openly, which is more than most do: on its own private-seller comparison, the free tier is rated 1x for search appearances and 1x for views by potential buyers, against 4.4x and 2.2x for Standard, and 6.8x and 4.5x for Accelerate. The free listing is not hidden — it is simply behind the paid ones in the ordering that decides who gets seen. Everything the free tier does offer is stated plainly too: appear on the marketplace, receive emails from interested buyers, list for six months.
3. The expiry gate
Both major free tiers run six months, and running until sold is what the paid tiers sell: SEEK Business's Standard at A$949 +GST and Accelerate at A$1,299 +GST both run until sold, and BusinessSales.com.au's Gold at A$3,000 +GST does the same. Six months is not a generous window for this asset class. On SEEK Business's own account, a sale averages six to nine months, and longer above a million dollars — which means a free tier can plausibly expire before a normal sale completes.
Where the other free tiers genuinely beat ours
- BusinessSales.com.au gives its free sellers a secure data room, an electronic confidentiality process and access to detailed buyer profiles — infrastructure most platforms will not give a paying seller, let alone a free one. If you judged free tiers purely on what is included in the box, theirs is the strongest in Australia, and the Insiders-Only visibility is the price of it.
- SEEK Business's free tier puts a private seller in front of the largest audience available for nothing in this market — its public search carried 16,523 listings on the day we checked, which is the scale of traffic that index attracts. Even at 1x ranking, that is more free exposure than a newer marketplace can offer, ours included.
- Both of those free tiers sit on platforms with years of accumulated buyer habit behind them. Bsale, though it has no free tier at all, has been running since 2000 with over 15,000 listings — which is a reminder that the cheapest option and the one most likely to find your buyer are not automatically the same.
What free never covers
No free listing anywhere includes the parts of a sale that actually cost money. You will still need an accountant to get the earnings figure defensible, a solicitor for the contract of sale, and — if you use one — a broker, whose fee is entirely separate from anything a website charges. How to test a free tier in five minutes
- Search the site as a logged-out member of the public and see whether free listings appear at all. If they do not, the free tier is a members-only tier.
- Sort or scan the first page of results and check where free listings land relative to featured ones.
- Find the expiry. If the pricing page does not say how long the free listing runs, assume it is short.
- Check who is eligible. Several free tiers are private-seller only, so a broker or franchisor cannot use them.
- Check whether enquiries reach you directly, or whether the buyer's contact details are withheld until you upgrade — this is a common pattern internationally and worth confirming on any site you use.
